Extra Translation Notes for 2nd Touhou M-1 Grand Prix R Watching the full video before reading this is recommended if you'd like to avoid spoilers. SPOILERS BELOW --[Opening]-- Cirno's handwritten nameplate is written incorrectly. The first character is written backwards making it another character entirely; it would be like writing "d" instead of "b". Keine: "10,000 hectares of land in the Human Village" The amount said in the original dialogue is "100,000 goku". Goku is a traditional measurement of volume which represents the amount of rice used by one person for all of their 3 daily meals in a year. In the context of measuring area, one unit of goku "area" refers to the area in which one goku "volume" worth of rice can be harvested. 100,000 goku of land means "enough land to harvest 100,000 goku of rice" which is, depending on season and yield, very roughly equivalent to 10,000 hectares. Rinnosuke (about Yuuka): "If you don't laugh enough, you're not doing enough." "If it's not enough, you're not doing enough." is a slogan from the Second World War in response to societal poverty. --[Tewi Reisen]-- Tewi (quoting her 5-year-old pet isopod): "I don't have an appetite." In 2009, a giant isopod being kept at the Toba Aquarium inexplicably began refusing to eat; it died of starvation five years later, the year that this video released. Some of Tewi's tongue twisters are actual popular tongue twisters: "Red Pajamas, Blue Pajamas, Yellow Pajamas" = "aka pajama, ao pajama, ki pajama" "BUS GAS BIG-BOOM-BLAST" = "basu gasu bakuhatsu" "How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?" This was originally a completely different Japanese tongue twister. Tewi is slightly cut off before finishing the whole thing, but the original tongue twister she says is "tonari no kyaku wa yoku kaki kuu (kyaku da)," meaning "The customer next to me is one who often eats persimmons." Lipovitan D is an actual energy drink and the commercial that they attempt to immitate is in the style of real Lipovitan commercials. --[Yakumo Chen]-- This isn't translation related, but if you're wondering why the subtitles are higher on the screen during the Q&A, it's because the black stroke/shadow of the subtitle text blended with the sign's writing in a way that made the subtitles a bit hard to read sometimes. The subtitles were moved above the Q&A sign to make the text more clear. "Time out." Both times Ran does this, it's because she divulges info that was said in a future Touhou M-1 chronologically but because this remake came out afterward, Ran has secret knowledge that isn't supposed to be known yet. Ran: "Like Wanko Soba!" Wanko soba is a style of soba consumption where you quickly eat small, single-bite bowls of soba that keep rapidly getting refilled with the goal of eating as many as you can. Ran: "Keine and Iona? Same person." Iona is a main character in the manga/anime "Arpeggio of Blue Steel". If you're unfamiliar with what Iona looks like, a quick image search will explain the joke. --[Hourai Teruyo]-- Team name: "Teruyo" is an alternate, meme reading of Kaguya's name. Kaguya: "Actually, recently, I've been extremely ... short on funds." This joke was fully lost in translation and is a bit more layered than what's TL noted directly in the video. A more awkwardly worded but direct translation of Kaguya's line is, "Actually, recently, very... No Money." No Money (Okane ga Nai) is the name of a 1994 TV show starring the actor Yuji Oda. This is another reason for his name-drop a few lines later. --------------------------- Kaguya: "Sex: Available" The Japanese joke here is a confusion between three different things that are all pronounced "man." The first usage of it is back in the "passed/past" exchange. Another meaning is literally the English word "man" (as in the sex/gender). Lastly for this context, it's being used euphemistically to refer to women's private parts; people wouldn't typically assume you are referring to this. The (paraphrased and shortened) Japanese dialogue exchange effectively goes... Kaguya: "My age of death is 1380." Eirin: "That means you've passed away. Write 'man' (age) there." Kaguya: "Oh, write 'man'? Okay. Next, my sex: man." Eirin: "Why would you put your sex as 'man' (male)?" Kaguya: "Wouldn't a male applicant put [male private parts] instead of 'man' (euphemism)?" And so the originally innocuous term was suddenly no longer innocuous. --------------------------- Kaguya: "I smoothly graduated five years later." Kaguya technically says "four years" in the original dialogue, but due to some English-speaking countries having four years of high school by default, it was changed to five to cover all bases. Kaguya: "A witch hunt for another girl." Kaguya's Japanese line ("I stole a bike and started running.") is quoting lyrics from the song "THE NIGHT" by Yutaka Ozaki. --[PatchuMirin]-- Team Name: "Mirin" is a mispronunciation of Meiling's name that can occur if it's read in a Japanese way instead of a Chinese way. The specifics are rather difficult to explain in English, but for an analogy, it would be like pronouncing the word "colonel" as "call-oh-nell" instead of "ker-nal". The background wall scroll in the dojo says "Sleep is the foundation of health." The boombox: To say this is mimicking Mizoguchi from the movie "The Classroom of Terror" (bouryoku kyoushitsu) is an understatement. Every line from the boombox is a quote from Mizoguchi during a specific scene in the movie and the BGM is an arrangement of the music that plays in that scene. The specifics of this joke are obscure to a degree that can't be overstated and most people probably don't fully understand it. --[PatchuMirin Judging]-- Healing Lily White: This is referring to someone who would show up to Touhou doujin events dressed in an outfit resembling Lily White. This person would distribute leaflets with their character/outfit drawn on them to doujin circle participants. This brief moment would have a "healing" effect on the busy participants. This is also referenced in the first Yakumo Chen manzai, but relating it to this moment gives more context, as you can see what Lily is doing during this bit. --[Commercial]-- The lyrics for Haru yo Koi have no official English translation, but here are the lyrics that were used as a baseline for Lily's version: Come, spring! Come quickly! Little Mii has started walking With her red sandal straps Waiting eagerly to go outside --[Yakumo Chen FINALS]-- KCYCHA: The original Japanese phrase used is "Koe ga Cicchai Yon Chen HA" ("ha" is pronounced "wa"). "koe ga chicchai" = voice is tiny "yon" = a meaningless, happy-sounding voice "chen ha" = Chen is/has Reshuffling the word order, it's effectively: Chen's voice is tiny, *yon* IKS: "Ii Kagen ni Shiro", the line that 90% of the cast says at the end of their manzai performances. Basically just means "Get it together." --[Tewi Reisen FINALS]-- Tewi: "I brought a sloth!" In the Japanese dialogue, Tewi says she brought at tanuki and then brings a "tanuki oyaji" instead. "Tanuki oyaji" is a derogatory term used to refer to a cunning old man. A tanuki oyaji is malicious, knows their way around, and knows how to get what they want. Tewi: "I brought an ocelot! It's Revolver Ocelot!" The original animal is a snake and the name drop is Sandayu Dokumamushi, with "mamushi" meaning "pit viper". "Kaguya's Room" and the set used are a parody of the talk show "Tetsuko's Room". --------BONUS TRACK-------- --[Yakumo Chen (Original)]-- Ran: "That would be jelly donuts." Ran's original reply on the phone is, "A vigorous Kyushu Boy". She then clarifies that the question asked was "What is 'mokkosu'?" "Mokkosu" is a nickname that refers to Mokou. "Higo mokkosu" is a term referring to strong-tempered people from Kumamoto Prefecture (in Kyushu). Following that, she claims that they haven't gone "full mokko (full Mokou)" enough. Ran: "Kaguya Ohtaisan." Ohta Isan is a stomach medicine manufacturer. Chen: "Let me guess, SongBird?" "Kotori Co." is what's said in Japanese. Kotori Co. is a talent agency, with "Kotori" literally meaning "small bird". Ran: "Remilia and Kuro-chan? Same person." Kuro-chan is a comedian who is known for his high-pitched voice and outlandish behavior. -------------------------- Disclaimer / Clarification: This document was voluntarily put together by the translator/subtitler. It was written based on my personal understanding and interpretation of the dialogue. It's possible that I've missed some jokes or references. This is not an exhaustive list of every joke--only ones obscured by language or cultural barriers. To demonstrate what I mean (and serve as a bonus for those who didn't get the reference), here is an example of a reference that wouldn't normally be noted: In PatchuMirin's manzai, the frog that appears is Prince Fleaswallow from PaRappa the Rapper. In that series, he runs a flea market. This is why he's rivals with a furniture store.
