Extra Translation Notes for 4th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix

--[Opening]--

Remilia Interview: Chicken Scratch and "Uu~":
In the original dialogue, Rinnosuke asks if Remilia has started writing in hiragana and if
she goes "Uu~ Uu~". Writing in only hiragana is viewed as childish and "Uu~" is a fandom
meme phrase that Remilia uses and is also viewed as cute/childish.

Sanae: "10,000 hectares of land in the Lunar Capital."
The amount said in the original dialogue is "100,000 goku". Goku is a traditional measurement of
volume which represents the amount of rice used by one person for all of their 3 daily meals in a year.
In the context of measuring area, one unit of goku "area" refers to the area in which one goku "volume"
worth of rice can be harvested. 100,000 goku of land means "enough land to harvest 100,000 goku of rice"
which is, depending on season and yield, very roughly equivalent to 10,000 hectares.



--[Kishin Girls]--

Oni of Immaterial and Missing Laughter
The original team alias is "suimushou no oni hime tachi" (lit. 'Oni Princesses of Drunken Dream Laughter'). "suimushou" is a play on the title of 7.5: "Touhou Suimusou ~ Immaterial and Missing Power".
Suimusou (in the title for Touhou 7.5) means "Gathering Dream" whereas Suimushou (in the team alias) means
"Drunken Dream Laughter".

Mokou: "Wassup?"
Keine: "I didn't think you'd enter that way."
This is an ASCII art meme, typically involving Mokou saying "oisu" (wassup) and Keine
responding with "moko-tan IN shitao!" (Moko-tan has come IN!)
It's often depicted with Mokou coming out of a panel in the floor.



--[WerePhoenix Judging]--

Kaguya: "Hmph. Mokou has disconnected."
The original line again references "Moko-tan has come IN!", this time Kaguya effectively
saying "Moko-tan's IN is sealed off."



--[Moriya Kero]--

Team Name:
In Touhou, the "Moriya" in "Suwako Moriya" and "Moriya Shrine" are written differently.
This team name uses the "Moriya" in Suwako's name and Kanako isn't represented at all.

Suwako: "You know, recently, I've gained a new ability."
Touhou character abilities are usually written in the distinct Japanese phrase
"... teido no nouryoku" which is phrasing that's iconic to Touhou.
A rough English translation would be something like "Ability to the extent of..."
and this typically isn't conveyed in English translations for Touhou.
Suwako, in the quoted line, uses this phrasing and says the weirdly worded sentence,
"You know, I recently learned a new 'ability to the extent of'."
Kanako uses the same phrasing later as well.



--[Cat Stone]--

Duel at Ganryu Island is the climactic finale of an old historical drama trilogy.



--[Satori Koishi]--

Mousewrecker
"dorobou neko" (lit. 'thief cat') is a phrase that refers to a homewrecker.
The thing said in the dialogue is "neko dorobou" (lit. 'cat thief') which is flipping the meaning around.

Koishi's school uniform is from Lucky Star and
Satori's is from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, particularly Yuki Nagato's look.
