Extra Translation Notes for 7th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix

--[Troupe miko]--

Futo: "Damp? Like, the Crown Prince's favorite, Oreo cookies and milk?"
The original dialogue uses "Country Ma'am" cookies instead. The "cooky/kooky" and "cookie" pun
is originally "kuuki" (atmosphere) and "kukkii" (cookie).

Kyouko Otonashi
This is a character from the manga/anime "Maison Ikkoku".

"Crane, crane. + Thou dost construction?! + Thy legs dost crane?!"
Crane (the bird) in Japanese is "tsuru". "tsurutsuru" is an onomatopoeia used to refer to
something that is smooth, shiny, slippery, and/or greasy.
Futo's first self-retort line is originally "You'll slip!"
Her second self-retort line is originally "You'll go bald!"



--[Mystery Parasol]--

Kogasa: "What?! You mean I'm behind the times?!"
This line from Undefined Fantastic Object ("nanto, wachiki ga jidai okure to mousu ka") is a meme
in the Japanese Touhou community due to the unusual wording of the line, particularly the way that
Kogasa refers to herself as "wachiki", which is a very outdated way to refer to oneself.



--[Jealousy Star]--

The "hoshi" in Yuugi Hoshiguma means "star".

Parsee: "PARU PARU PARU"
This is a meme expression associated with Parsee. It's generally used to convey Parsee feeling jealous.
For example, in fanart, jealous Parsee may have the SFX "Paru Paru" written next to her or
she may otherwise be portrayed as being "paruparu-y" as an adjective.



--[Jealousy Star Judging]--

When Yoshika replaces Seiga, the nameplate changes to "Yoshika Miyako".



--[Yasaka Kanako]--

Kanako: "Pon de Chen will be made."
Pon de Lion is the mascot of Mister Donut, the donut chain behind Pon De Ring donuts.

When the Myouren Temple cult image is shown, Byakuren's sutra scroll
at the top has "Myouren" written on it.



--[PatchuMirin]--

Love Hotel Pillows:
The purple and pink pillows say "No!!" and "Yes" respectively.

Meiling: "I have eye drops!"
In the original line, Meiling specifically name drops the brand "Rohto Z!"

Yoshika's Song
The melody of the song that is sung while Yoshika is next to the bed is from the soundtrack of
a film from Taiwan called "You huan dao shi", titled "Hello Dracula" in English and
"Yuugen Doushi Kyonshiizu! / Phantom Taoist Jianshi" in Japanese.
"Rairai! Kyonshiizu" ('They Come! Jiangshi!'), a TV spinoff of the film series, also uses it.



--[Jealousy Star FINALS]--

Parsee: "Dosea ain't no name I've ever heard of! Who the hell is Dosea?"
The original lines here are "Who is 'ashikaga ageashi'? Some shogunate?"
"ashika ga ageashi" means "sea lion raising its leg" and the Ashikaga shogunate was once the governing
shogunate of Japan. "ashika ga ageashi" turned into the made-up name "Ashikaga Ageashi".



--[PatchuMirin FINALS]--

Meiling: "Monthly MOOn."
This is a parody of the occult magazine "Monthly MU".

Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, History Channel, and National Geographic
The original name-drop is Yaoi Jun'ichi, an investigator and documentary director specializing in UFOs.
Instead of "History Channel", the original dialogue says "Kotori Co.", which is an office that hosted
"Minoru Torihada", a comedian whose acting persona makes a satirical mockery of imperial Japan.
Instead of "National Geographic", the original dialogue says "Ookawa Kogyo", which is an entertainment
agency known for hosting satirical comedy and drama entertainment.

Disclaimer / Clarification:

This document was voluntarily put together by the translator/subtitler.
It was written based on my personal understanding and interpretation of the dialogue.
It's possible that I've missed some jokes or references.

This is not an exhaustive list of every joke--only ones obscured by language or cultural barriers.

I have no particular example of a vague reference worth mentioning this time,
so instead, here's a potentially interesting Touhou M-1 tidbit:

In PatchuMirin's first manzai, Yuuka makes a sudden appearance with no context
whatsoever and then leaves just as quickly. This brief nonsensical cameo is
actually Yuuka's first appearance in the series. Yuuka is not present in the
original 1st or 2nd Touhou M-1 Grand Prix and was added to the remake versions.
The remakes that released after the 7th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix effectively take place
in another universe that is disconnected from the chronology of Touhou M-1.
If you experience this moment with that info in mind, it becomes even more
ridiculous and irrational than it already was.
