Extra Translation Notes for 8th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix Watching the full video before reading this is recommended if you'd like to avoid spoilers. SPOILERS BELOW --[Cloud Gang]-- Ichirin: "You mean the one on Gensou Housou Kyoukai every day?" This is a parody of parody of NHK, Japan's national broadcaster. No one, and I mean NO ONE, refers to it by its full name; everyone calls it NHK. Ichirin: "Why the flamboyant tone?!" Unzan's previous line is delivered with a stereotypically gay tone and mannerism. --[Kourin Spark]-- "Let's go to COCO'S" This song/tune is used in a commercial for the restaurant COCO'S. Marisa: "Patrasche!" Patrasche is the dog from "A Dog of Flanders". The version of Patrasche portrayed is specifically from the 1975 anime adaptation of it. --[Bakusen Niang Niang]-- The "Bakusen" in the team name means "Burst (of Laughter) Hermit". Wolf in Hermit's Clothing The original team alias is "jasen insui" (lit. 'Wicked Hermit Drawing Water'). This is a play on the phrase "gaden insui" which literally means "drawing water from one's own field" but idiomatically refers to one who bends information/arguments to suit their own interests. "★bucks" McDonald's is what was name-dropped in the original dialogue. McDonald's' nickname in Japanese is "makku" which rhymes with the previous lines. "It should be fine under the table." was also originally "It should be fine in the smoking area." --[Suzukyun♪]-- Akyuu: "Hello. Thank you for your hard work." Akyuu's unusual opening line is referencing the manzai duo "Reiwa Roman". Akyuu: "I'd repel them with Pon De Rings." Kosuzu: "You just revealed the store!" Pon De Rings are a donut specific to the donut chain Mister Donut. Akyuu: "Yew? Yew? You!" In the original dialogue, Akyuu says "iu? iu? you" with "iu" meaning "say," making her lines mean "Would they say that? Would they say that? 'You'." The original line that was translated to "Isn't that knife handle made of yew wood? Would a normal robber use that?" is "Would a robber normally come inside, saying 'This is a rental book robbery!'?" Akyuu: "What if, in the novel section, a vampire is sprawling around and reading Twilight?!" The original thing being read is a Bessatsu Margaret shoujo manga magazine in the magazine section. --[Autumn Leaves]-- Jamie Oriver The original name said is "Kawagoe Chef", referring to the chef and TV personality Tatsuya Kawagoe. "kawagoe", when written differently, means "crossing a river". Minoriko: "The rice we'll use is Hakurei Shrine Asahi No. 1." Asahi No. 1 (asahi ichi gou) is a type of rice that has largely fallen out of use due to the difficulty of cultivating/harvesting it. Minoriko: "Moriya Shrine's salt." This is referring to the Shinto custom of placing salt by the entrance to locations to bring good luck. Minoriko: "With that, the Autumn Fried Rice is complete." This line falls flat in English compared to Japanese. Throughout the manzai, the ingredients used in the fried rice are overall unrelated to autumn in any way. However, when the fried rice lands on Minoriko Aki's head and gets mixed together with her, it becomes "aki fried rice", with "aki" being the Japanese word for "autumn". --[Commercial]-- The commercial is parodying a documentary-style green juice commercial. It's presented as a documentary of a persimmon gardener, covering both some of the hardships and the successes of his line of work, the biggest current hardship being that he doesn't have time to eat healthy meals. Near the end, his wife brings him green juice and it abruptly transitions into a green juice commercial. --[Suzukyun♪ FINALS]-- Daruma-san ga Koronda "Daruma-san ga Koronda" is a game like "Red-Light, Green Light" in which one person is "it" (an oni) and stands against a pole-like object, facing it with their eyes closed. The oni repeats the phrase "Daruma-san ga Koronda" and is able to turn around and look each time the phrase is finished. The goal of the other players is to touch the oni's back while staying safe. If someone is caught moving or is within a very close distance of the oni when they turn around, the oni captures them. There are many house rules and variations, but that's the gist of it. --[Credits]-- The banner above Seiga and Kasen says "Winner's Exhibition!!" with "Concert" scribbled over it such that it reads, "Winner's Concert" The label on Kasen's plant says "Heavenly Peach". --------------------------- Disclaimer / Clarification: This document was voluntarily put together by the translator/subtitler. Born from Medusa's neck-" In Greek mythology, Pegasus sprang out from Medusa after she was beheaded.
