Extra Translation Notes for 11th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix Watching the full video before reading this is recommended if you'd like to avoid spoilers. SPOILERS BELOW --[Opening]-- The nameplate in front of Mamizou says "Village Lady" during the opening segment. The nameplate in front of Komachi says "Eiki Shiki" and the paper stuck over it says "Substitute: Komachi Onozuka". --[Flower Beat]-- Laugh to the Beat of your Own Drum The original team alias is "kofuku gekishou". "kofuku gekijou" (lit. "drumming on belly, striking soil") is an expression that refers to people enjoying peace and tranquility. Changing the last word of the expression from "jou" to "shou", its literal meaning becomes "drumming on belly, striking laughter". --[Flower Beat Judging]-- Komachi: "Rake-Oh Horikawa..." Komachi verbally reads the name "Raiko" as if it were two separate words, resulting in "kaminari tsuzumi". The name "Raiko" name literally means "thunder drum". --[Yakumo Shiki]-- The team name "Yakumo Shiki" has a double meaning that's lost in translation. "Shiki" can be used to abbreviate the word "shikigami" but it's also used to refer to types, styles, or methods of something. So the team name also means "Yakumo Style". Yukari: "Like that broad Yasaka." To clarify what's happening here in the original dialogue, Yukari is referring to Kanako as "Kanako Yasaka" and referring to someone in "first name, last name" order is strange and comes off as rather dismissive. Ran's backstory and past: Yukari's stories "exposing" Ran are largely based on Tamamo no Mae, a fox spirit in Japanese mythology. There are multiple interpretations of Tamamo no Mae, but in relation to the manzai, a story contains the following events: During the Shang dynasty, she possessed King Zhou's concubine, causing the downfall of the Shang dynasty. Fleeing to what is now India, she became the king Kalmashapada's consort, influencing him to commit various atrocities, and returned to China. Later, she tricked an envoy to allow her to take a ship to Japan, where she hid herself. Eventually, in Japan, she was given the name Tamamo no Mae and became Emperor Toba's consort. However, she was caught making the emperor ill to shorten his life, but fled the ritual that she was to be a part of. After being chased for days, one of the warriors pursuing her had a dream in which she begged to be saved. Undeterred, the warriors caught and killed her. However, her spirit haunted a stone that would release poisonous gas, killing anyone who touched it. --[Satori Koishi]-- Satori: "Stop, Koishi. Stop stroking the boat." The original things said are "tekogi" (rowing/paddling) and "tegoki," which sounds like the other thing. Satori: "That's right. Musashi swings both ways." The original term used is "ni tou ryuu" (lit. dual wielding) which can refer to someone who's bisexual. --[Purely Hell]-- Junko: Black Licorice The original food said here is "hijiki" which is a type of seaweed. Junko: "Stupid! I'm super hip and young!" Junko's motion/animation during this is referencing Hyuuma Hoshi, the main character of the 60/70s anime "Star of the Giants". Hecatia: "It's for a performance! Would you buy from Hot Topic?" The original line is "Would you buy from a second-hand store in Harajuku?". Stores in Harajuku are known for appealing to youth culture and trendy fashion. --[Hifuudou]-- Sumireko: "Former Cosa Nostra member." The original name said was "Kantou Rengou", a former criminal gang. Sumireko: "It's ya boi!" The original term used to set this up is "ore ore sagi" ("It's me! It's me!" Scam). This is a type of scam in which the scammer tries to trick the person into thinking the scammer is someone close to them. Instead of doing it correctly, Sumireko literally says "ore ore" ("It's me! It's me!"). Sumireko: "A 3 million yen scam- I meant yam." The original words used are "kanpukin" (refund) and "panpukin" (pumpkin). The label on "Goku's" face says "Voluntary Censorship". --[Satori Koishi FINALS]-- Koishi: "Hey! I've come, Backbeard! Take this!" Backbeard is a youkai that is generally portrayed as a large black sphere with an eye in the center. It was brought into pop culture by the manga "Gegege no Kitarou", in which Backbeard is an antagonist. --[Hifuudou FINALS]-- Sengoku Folktale: The entire Attack on Honnou-ji sequence for Sumireko's first folktale is based off of a scene from a 1996 NHK taiga drama series called "Hideyoshi". Noh Performances: The two songs are from Yellow Zebra's "Boundary Phantasia / Kyoukai Phantasia" and "Moon Light Septet". Momotarou: The names said were changed in the subtitles, but the idea of what's being said is unchanged. --------------------------- Disclaimer / Clarification: This document was voluntarily put together by the translator/subtitler.
