Extra Translation Notes for 17th Touhou M-1 Grand Prix Watching the full video before reading this is recommended if you'd like to avoid spoilers. SPOILERS BELOW --[Opening]-- Rinnosuke: "I guess it's time for Chen to fly the nest, huh?" Ran: "You said it perfectly. Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." The original proverb said by Rinnosuke is "Let your beloved child travel.", which is to say, "Let your child learn to overcome hardships; don't shelter them forever." The original proverb said by Ran is "The lion drops its cub down the ravine." with the implication that the lion will only raise the cubs who climb back up and survive. It is comparable to the English idiom "throw someone in at the deep end". --[Star-Sparked Wildfox]-- Team Name: The original team name is "tenko ryuu shou" (Heavenly Foxes and Dragon Laughter). It is a play on the spell card "tenko ryuu sei no mai" (Dance of Heavenly Foxes and Dragon Stars). The "ryuu/dragon" in the name of the team and spell card is also the same kanji character as Megumu's name. Tsukasa: "Bonk!" The original thing Tsukasa says is "kon". This appears as handwritten text over Tsukasa's portrait in Unconnected Marketeers. "konkon" represents the bark of a fox and is often associated with them. Megumu: "Don't waste your wish. The Yama already pulls out the tongue of any liar." "If you lie, the Yama will pull out your tongue." is a superstition sometimes told to children. --[MikoSaki Household]-- "Wonton" + "Watanabe" Miko lists various types of "nabe" (a type of hotpot) and then asks what kind Saki likes; when Saki says the one she likes, Miko respond with her "Watanabe" line. Due to "Watanabe" not really sounding like any food-related words in English (that I could think of), it was changed to Miko simply listing various types of soups and Saki's response somewhat resembling the name Watanabe. Saki: "Then... the forest." Miko: "Gump isn't here!" The original location said is "yama" (the mountain) and the name said is Yutaka Yamakawa, a singer. --[Cats Star]-- Cats Star is a parody of the comedy duo "Nyanko Star". Mike: "Wait, there's more!" The original line that Mike says is a phrase used by the comedy duo "Untouchable" used to unnaturally and forcefully drag a topic on beyond the initial punchline. Chen's "We should go to sleep." comment is also similarly modified, originally meaning something along the lines of "Yeah, so uh..." --[Scarlet Spoon]-- Flandre: "A B C D E F G, H I J K L M NOkina!" The specific way that Flandre pronounces Okina's name is a nickname for Okina used in some fanworks. "NOkina" with an N at the beginning isn't Flandre's original line; it was modified for English. --[Commercial]-- The commerical is a parody of a commercial for the Japanese staffing agency OUTSOURCING Inc. --------------------------- Disclaimer / Clarification: This document was voluntarily put together by the translator/subtitler. It was written based on my personal understanding and interpretation of the dialogue. It's possible that I've missed some jokes or references. This is not an exhaustive list of every joke--only ones obscured by language or cultural barriers. To demonstrate what I mean (and serve as a bonus for those who didn't get the reference), here is an example of a reference that wouldn't normally be noted: In Cats Star's first manzai, the dance motion that Chen does multiple times is based on Caramelldansen.
